Rough cut pages are lightly tanned and thumbed at the edges, with creased corners and foxing. Hinge are cracked. Boards are a little rub worn with slight shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are a little bumped. Spine ends are a mildly crushed, with small splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Noticeable tanning to otherwise clear pages, pastedowns and free endpapers. More prominent to text block edges. Light cracking to gutters; some looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear.

No dust jacket. Published during the last year of the Civil War, this was before the public knew that Currer Bell was actually Charlotte Brontë. The pages are generally clean and tight although one page has torn free of the stitching. The cover is worn and soiled, and the fabric over the spine has come loose along the front edge. I am selling this one "as is" because I haven't the ability to effect repairs. If you do, then you will have a very rare book once you have completed the task. There are no markings within the book. (I have been unable to actually find a 1864 edition on the market and very few others with Currer Bell as the author.)
