Minor pencil marking to front free end-paper. Cracking to hinges, no damage to end papers. Binding remains firm. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains. Gilt lettering is bright and clear.

Red coloured splatter to the text block edges – and there is a suspicion that at one stage the top edge had been gilded. This book was an attempt by the author to give a succinct history of the course of French literature. Starting from mediaeval literature, flowing through to the Renaissance, then to the 17th and 18th century up to the 19th century. This book is in remarkably good shape for its age.
