Light thumb marking, scuffing and tanning to pages. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Binding is very slightly loose but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild bubbling, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has much heavier tanning with minor splitting and crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Illustrator: various. the only annotation that I can find is a pencil while on page 247. The author describes the early history of heat engines so as to show at what point and by what men the essential principles were 1st conceived. He then goes on to the earliest reciprocating steam pumps and from these to the development of rotary motion from the piston. His method is to follow principle from simple to complex machines, step-by-step describing the difficulties and shortcomings, and the ingenious methods by which these were gradually mastered. He completes the story of the reciprocating or piston engined, and then begins with the history of methods of using the kinetic energy of steam, bringing this part to its combination in the modern turbine. A clean, tight copy of what is probably the first edition of this title. Maddeningly, it is not dated, but the most recent reference in the text to a development in the history of steam engines is 1924, so I am guessing that this was issued in 1925, and later reprinted by Cambridge University Press in conjunction with industry giant Babcock and Wilcox. This copy has been bound in sturdy library buckram, and withdrawn from circulation. The graphics are crisp and excellent. A few plates have been embossed by the library on the periphery with a lacy design. Otherwise, library markings are minimal. There is a pull-out chart at the back giving a time-line of steam engine developments. It is intact, but requires careful handling.
