About This Item

One of 500 copies in very good+ condition of First Edition on Japanese laid paper of poetry collection by Stefan George, one of Germany's most important poets. Inspired by the French symbolist poet Mallarmé's vision of art for arts sake, George devoted himself to the production of highly refined, often hermetic, poetry for an elite audience. Gilt embossed purple linen boards. Top edge gilt. Binding intact. Slight sunning to cover. Text displays typography designed by with elegant hieratic, symbolic, decorative design combining with gothic elements with fin de siècle arts and crafts design by Melchior Lechter, (1865–1937) noted German book designer and painter closely connected with Stefan George's circle. Rare.
