First edition, 1854, inscribed by author in 1872 and with a small photograph of her pasted in, small 8vo, pebbled black half morocco and marbled boards, 2 volumes in one, with list of subscribers at rear. Very good with minimal rubbing to leather. Carolina Coronado (1820-1911) was a very well known author of poems, novels and plays, called 'The female Béquer,' a sufferer of catalepsy which led to a lifelong preoccupation with death. She had her deceased husband embalmed and refused to bury him. The plot of this historical novel concerns the lives of three women who are either unhappily married, cannot marry the beloved, or must conform to the societal expectations of women at that time, set partly in Portugal in the 16th century.
