Silas Marner by George Eliot - 1907

London : Macmillan and Co. Limited , 1907 A good copy of the first edition of Silas Marner with Hugh Thomson illustrations. With 24 colour plates, 21 full page black and white illustrations and numerous illustrations and designs in the text. One of the few works illustrated by Thomson to have colour plates. In the original dark green decorative cloth binding with stunning gilt illustration and titles to front board and spine. All page edges gilt. The binding is very bright and clean. There is some indentation and cloth loss to the top edges of the boards and some areas of cloth loss to the side edges. The front top corner is bumped with some cloth loss; the bottom corner has similar bumping. Spine ends have wear with a little fraying at the top. The back board has lost some of the shine from its surface, with a couple of darker areas, and there is very slight warp at the top. Internally there is a decorative bookplate to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents are in very good clean condition. There is a small blind stamp to the title page with the words 'presentation copy'. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
