Middletown, Ct: Wesleyan University Press, 1961. 276pp, black cloth boards with titles in white and gold on spine, and Cage's last name blind stamped on front board. Shelfwear to spine ends and forecorners, but binding is secure, spine is straight, and corners are solid. Endpapers contain a design by Elaine de Kooning based on Cage's Concert for Piano and Orchestra. Contents of book are clean and unmarked. Pages show no evidence of toning or other wear apart from one page that was dogeared at some stage. Faint reddish cast to top page ends. Black dust jacket with titles on spine and front cover in gold and white. Twelve-picture array of Cage on the back cover. Some rubbing/shelfwear to the black of the front cover, but the titles remain clear and bright. Small closed tear, well-healed, about 1/4" in from top front fore-edge of jacket. Another small, well-healed closed tear at bottom left corner of jacket front, and one about an inch in from spine on back cover. One word written in pencil, faintly on front flyleaf. Jacket presented under mylar. Volume collects Cage's essays, lectures, and ideas on musical composition at a time of great productivity and influence in his career. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to.
