INSCRIBED by Joseph North, the editor, on the front end paper to artist Raphael Soyer and his wife Rebecca: "You were inspirers of this book. With love, Joe North." A nice association: Soyer was a socialist realist artist who taught at the John Reed Club, the New School for Social Research, and the Art Students' League.
The book consists of fiction, reportage, and essays from the pages of New Masses, a left-wing literary magazine that was published from 1926-1948. With work by Ernest Hemingway, Muriel Rukeyser, Theodore Dreiser, James Agee, Kenneth Patchen, John Dos Passos, Dorothy Parker, Richard Wright, Nelson Algren, Federico Garcia Lorca (translated by Langston Hughes), Mike Gold, and Henri Barbuse, among many others. No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print Hollywood: Samuel Goldwyn Company, 1984. Vintage original 41 x 27"" (104 x 69 cm.) poster, USA. John Lurie, Eszter Balint, dir: Jim Jarmusch; Goldwyn. Unfolded, with just a couple of minute nicks in the blank left margin, JUST ABOUT FINE. Jim Jarmusch's first feature film, a landmark, surreal comedy laiden with dead- pan humor. There were two different posters for the movie -- this one, with a scene at a frigid Lake Erie, and another from the film's finale in Pensacola. There are numerous later repros of this poster on the market, but they measure 40 x 27"", and are printed only in black, whereas this poster is printed in black and brown.

Description:
New York: Produced and Released by Mainstream Magazine, [ca, 1947-8].. Original 12" 78 rpm double-sided phonograph record. Printed labels a trifle foxed, small blemish at extreme edge far from grooves, otherwise visually very good. A quite rare recording of Trumbo's recitation of his long poem, first published in the Winter 1947 (I:1) issue of MAINSTREAM. While OCLC includes a barebones entry for this recording (without citing locations), it refers to "Part 2" only, which is the flip side of the present record, and is somewhat contradictory, asserting there is "no linguistic content" and "unreadable" and that it is a "musical recording." OCLC: 77819968.

Description:
New York: New World Records, 1977. Pop artist Robert Indiana's vivid serigraph poster for the 1977 New World Records release of The Mother of Us All, Virgil Thomson's 1947 opera about Susan B. Anthony, with a libretto by Gertrude Stein: "The right to sleep is given to no woman." Indiana had long been an active admirer of The Mother of Us All, designing sets for several stage productions, including the Santa Fe Opera's 1976 bicentennial production, whose recording is advertised here. The typography features Indiana's signature tipped O in MOTHER, a design element that recalls his iconic LOVE sculpture and stamp. For more on Indiana and The Mother of Us All, see David Littlejohn, "Artists on the Opera Stage" in The Ultimate Art (1992). A really attractive promotional poster, whose minor flaws would be mitigated by proper framing. Promotional poster, measuring 36 x 24 inches, screenprinted in red, yellow, black, white, and purple. Three corners creased, several short closed tears to bottom edge.

USSR propaganda posterEvery child in the USSR heard about the distant Chilean people suffering under the Pinochet junta. The USSR led the international campaign for the release of Luis Carvalan and since 1975 has been negotiating on this topic. In September 1976, the option to exchange Korvalan for the famous Soviet political prisoner, dissident Vladimir Bukovsky was officially announced simultaneously by the Danish Committee of the Sakharov Readings in Copenhagen and by Academician Andrei Sakharov himself in Moscow. On December 15, the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPSU adopted a decision "On measures in connection with the release of Comrade L. Korvalan", in accordance with which a special aircraft was allocated to deliver Korvalan and his family from Zurich, where the exchange was planned, to the USSR. The KGB of the USSR ensured the delivery of Bukovsky on a special plane to Zurich and sending his mother with him. On December 18, the exchange took place, after which Corvalan received… Read More
