Blue cloth covered boards with silver lettering and illustration of wolves on the front and silver lettering on spine. Light bumping and scuffing to edges of covers with a tiny bit of fraying to the corner tips and top and bottom of spine. Moderate overall scuffing to covers as well with a bit of the silver illustrations rubbed off on the front. Binding tight. Pages lightly aged but otherwise unmarked and the top corners of most pages are lightly creased. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. Wonderful illustrations by Kurt Wiese including a nice color frontis piece and 4 other color plates, with remainder of illustrations in black and white. Nice illustrated end-papers as well. Sherman John O'Brien (Jack O'Brien, his pen-name) (1897 - 1938) grew up in Minnesota and early on became known as a sportsman and adventurer. In 1928, he joined Admiral Richard E. Byrd Jr. on his first expedition to Antarctica and in 1929 participated in a three-month journey covering more than 1,500 miles both to survey the Queen Maud Mountains area of Antarctica and to provide ground support and any needed assistance for Byrd's attempted flight over the North Pole. O'Brien continued his life of adventure in the 1930s, using his experience with sled dogs to take several prospecting trips to northern Canada. O'Brien starting writing adventure books for young people with stories of sled dogs and trips in the north country, starting with Silver Chief: Dog of the North, published in 1933, and followed by Valiant: Dog of the Timberline, Corporal Corey of the Royal Canadian Mounted, Silver Chief to the Rescue, Rip Darcy: Adventurer, and Return of Silver Chief.
