"The water I baled from the bilge into the Atlantic that morning had come from the Pacific, the night before". He is the first person to cross the Pacific in an open boat - an 18-foot open undecked yawl - even though he was pitch-poled and swamped, drifting for two weeks before reach Vanuatu where he was swept over the reef to land on the beach. He was also capsized during a hurricane in the Canary Islands . He circumnavigated the world three times. At one point he had to pull the plug on his 38-foot sloop , surviving for 26 hours in the water until rescued by fishermen. "A man relentlessly driven to discover his limits, he pushes beyond them.
