Guyanese-British-American author, Eustace Edward Richardo Brathwaite (1912-2016) wrote this novel based on his own experiences as a teacher. It is th same novel that was adapted into a telefilm starring Sidney Poitier and pop singer Lulu. While he grew up in a home with Oxford-educated parents and economic security, he dedicated his life and his writings to exploring issue sof racial injustice, teaching literature at NYU and representing Guyana at the United Nations.
