First edition [limited, autographed]; 5 x 7 1/2; pp. [12], 3-341, [3]; original blue boards; wear along edges of spine; few spots to covers; front hinge reinforced with a thin linen strip; pages mostly very clean; good to very good condition. Gertrude Atherton was born in 1857 in San Francisco. She began writing as means of supporting herself after the tragic deaths of her husband and son. She has often been compared to her contemporary Edith Wharton. The book follows the story of two women from the opposite ends of the social ladder vying for the heart of the same man.
