About This Item

New York: Random House, 1990. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. First edition, hardcover issue. Small remainder stripe bottom edge, modest foxing on the page edges, else near fine in near fine dustwrapper with some barely noticeable foxing on the front panel. A nice of this play, inspired by a true story, that was the basis for the 1993 film directed by Fred Schipisi, with a screenplay by Guare, and featuring a splendid cast that included, among others, Stockard Channing (reprising her role from the play), Will Smith (in an early, dramatic role), Donald Sutherland, and Ian McKellen. Unfortunately actor Kevin Bacon was not directly associated with either the play or film, though with it he inspired the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Guare apparently coined the title phrase to describe the social and statistical phenomena researched by Stanley Milgram in the 1960s (that any individual can be linked personally to any other random individual through only a few intermediaries), and it is now a stock part of the English language. The hardcover issue of the first edition is uncommon.
