Salthouse in Norfolk, 1509. [Salthouse in Norfolk], circa 1509-1603. Six manuscript land grants on vellum, dealing with one specific feoffment in the coastal parish of Salthouse, in the Hundred of Holt, with dates ranging from the reign of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. All text is in Latin. The lot stitched together by hand at left margin. Documents vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 30 x 4 cm, the largest measuring 25 x 11 cm. Some age-toning, otherwise in very good and original condition, exceedingly scarce as a sequential lot of documents recording the rights and conveyance of feudal land. Henry VIII was King of England from 1509 until his death on 28 January 1547. Elizabeth I was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death on 24 March 1603. As such, these documents were made between the years 1509 and 1603. These documents span a century or so, and provide one family's history of inheritable land rights during Norfolk's feudal era. The name Robtus Bauman appears at the beginning of one of the documents. Hand stitched together to the left margins, all documents intact, the condition and completeness of the lot reveal the land's ownership and/or leasehold history over many generations. It also illustrates that this family appreciated the perdurable value of land rights. Sixteenth century land indentures are scarce survivors in any form. To find a sequential lot of related deeds, kept neatly and safely together for some three to four hundred years, is exceptionally uncommon and indeed invaluable to the history of its related ancestry and locality. . Manuscript.
