The first book on the subject, it is an engaging study that reflects Washburn's enthusiasm for the law and the history of his state. It was the starting point for several subsequent studies. Washburn [1800-1877] was a governor of Massachusetts, vice-president of the Massachusetts Historical Society, author of distinguished treatises on property and University Professor of Law at Harvard. Chafee, who heard accounts of Washburn from senior colleagues, wrote that "[h]e was probably the most beloved instructor who ever taught at Harvard Law School" (x:500).
