Light brown wraps, only slightly marked. Adverts for medical publications, apparatus and druggists with one sample pictorial plate. In January 1847 J Y Simpson began pioneering the use of ether as an anaesthetic in his midwifery practice, but by November of that year he was relying more on chloroform, which produced safer and more reliable results. In the United States Dr Charles Meigs was a strong opponent of the use of anaesthesia in midwifery. In 1848 he raised his objections and concerns about its use in response to a paper promoting and advocating chloroform in childbirth, by Simpson. Both these papers had previously been published in the Medical Examiner. Now, in this article, Simpson thoroughly responds to Meigs' objections. Each of Meigs' five points are carefully refuted. Important first novel by Welsh author Herbert Millingchamp Vaughan, 1870-1948. A rare dystopian science fiction work in which a vellum scroll is found in a metal cylinder in the Andes. This relates the dystopian history of the miniature planet Meleager, where the practice of eugenics ensures the death of defective children and where women have no power or political rights A rare book with a possible influence on Charlotte Haldane's Man's World and feminist dystopian literature generally, especially in the areas of eugenics and male patriarchy

Small octavo : pp. 4 blank (28) 436, 2 blank : new eps : gilt dentelles with floral motif : polished calf boards with triple gilt ruled border surrounding a floral and foliate border : rebacked with red leather title panel lettered in gilt and the publication year in gilt to tail of spine. Long note in small hand to first blank detailing the purchase of the volume in 1840 and some notes on the poet : trimmed at the head of the leaves : corners slightly rounded and gilt worn in patches but mostly bright. Thomas Randolph (1605-1635) was a poet, playwright and wit of great promise who was expected by many to become poet laureate after his mentor Ben Johnson. His early death at 29 (two years before Johnson) prevented this ambition from being realised.The note at the first blank reads, "Purchased at the sale of J. Abbot's Library Dublin 1840, for 15/6. Published by the Illustrated London News, 19 August 1876. 510 x 1200 mm, being slightly trimmed, excising the Illustrated London News heading from the top edge, but retaining serviceable margins. A worn copy with old tape repairs to the back. Edges worn and frayed, with some loss to margins, but with only limited loss to image surface. A few small fold tears and holes with minimal loss to printed surface, the first vertical fold from the left almost entirely split. The ornate lettered title is edge worn but just about survives any loss. This is a good clear printing of this image, produced before the wooden blocks became too worn; the shipping and other smaller features present in attractive detail. Requires paper repair and conservation, probably with some type of backing.
