THE SLEEPER AWAKES by H.G. Wells - 1921

The Sleeper Awakes (1910) is a dystopian novel about a man who sleeps for 203 years, waking up in a completely transformed London where he has become the richest man in the world. He sees his dreams realized, and the future revealed to him in all its horrors and malformities. The novel is a rewritten version of When the Sleeper Wakes, a story by Wells that was serialised between 1898 and 1899. (Woody Allen borrowed heavily from this novel for his famous 1973 film Sleepers.)

This copy, from British Books Ltd., was published in 1921. It is navy blue flexible pebbled leather with plain covers and bright gold design and lettering on the spine. Wells' signature is also embossed on the cover. There are very minor wear marks on the edges. The tops of the pages are stained in very bright gold.

Inside, the paper is thick, heavy stock.There is a bookplate on the inside front cover, which will steam off. A black and white photograph of Wells faces the title page.

On one of the front endpapers, someone has written, in ink, 'To Gwen, from Grandma and Grandpa Hewitt'. That page has a small tear, the title page has a small tear, the Table of Contents has a small tear, and page 12 has a small tear—each ½", all in the same place . In each case, someone has put tape over the tear. The tape can be steamed off.

Other than that, the book is perfect. 'Nice thick paper, with clean bright type and no marks of any kind. It's a very attractive little book.
