A lovely clean copy finely bound by Blackwells in contemporary full red morocco. Spine with raised bands, ruled in gilt. Compartments double ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Double ruled borders on boards. Gilt inner denteles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Neat previous owners bookplate on front paste down endpaper. A fine copy of this intertesting travelogue.:

Dobson and Co. London. 1820. FIRST DOBSON EDITION. 8vo. [2], [11]-194, [492] pages. There is an error in the pagination: 44-73 are omitted in the page numbering but the text is complete. Illustrated with engraved portraits of Queen Caroline (frontispiece) and Bergami, and a large hand coloured folding plate showing a depiction of the Lords at the trial with a legend of the individuals present. One page with a small hole to the middle of the leaf and some offsetting to the two portrait engravings otherwise a very good copy in an attractive early fine leather binding of full mid brown calf. Both boards elaborately decorated with blind tooled multiple oval design panel within twelve ruled line border. An arc and star gilt roll has been tooled around the outside of the boards. Spine with four wide raised bands, each with gilt decorations. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Board edge corners with gilt ruled lines. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled.

Chapman & Hall Ltd. London. 1933. Manuscript copy of the book in a neat hand, with the writer's brief notes in the margins, in a ruled notebook. (10 x 8.1 inches). Calligraphic title page, the text written in black, red and green inks. Photo negative of the fold out 'Street of taste' pull-out and typed leaf of 'The growth of good taste' tree, both loosely inserted. The corresponding page numbers from the 1933 first edition are noted in the margins, and the text contains the unchanged poem on page 119, suggesting that this was copied from a first issue of the first edition. Half beige buckram binding with marbled paper on boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges speckled with red. A fine copy of this curious but attractive item.

Vol.1; xlviii,566pp,8pp ads; Vol.2; xxiv,622pp; Vol.3; xvi,374pp. Minor hole to prelim pages of volume one otherwise a clean tight set in contemporary brown calf bindings with ruled lines & numbering, and red title labels, all in gilt, to the spines. Hinges all professionally repaired. Blind stamped rope border to the boards. Edges a but rubbed and bumped but overall a very good set. Previous owners attractive armorial bookplate (Samuel Wells, Jun. of Huntingdon) to all of the front pastedown endpapers and neat hand written notes to the first 2 volume's front free endpapers. Overall a very god set.

This is copy number 78 of only 100 copies for sale (there were another 10 copies for presentation) initialled by the printer, Ridley Burnett. A fine bright copy which is a beautifully produced facsimile of the famous Kelmscott Press edition of 1893. Finely hound bound in full white limp vellum, lettered in gilt. Green silk ties which were specially woven for this edition by H. Caldicott of London. With a short booklet about the 1893 edition, again limited, numbered and this initialled by Harold Smith and Ridley Burnett. Grey paper wraps with silk tie to the hinge. The two volumes are Housed in the publishers original grey paper covered slip case. A beautiful facsimile of a beautiful edition of Shakespeare's Poems in fine condition.
