First printing. Dubus's first - and only full-length - novel, a story of military life in peacetime, but in essence about the conflict between idealism and expediency. Dubus served for 5 years in the US Marines and knew well the world of which he was writing. In comments quoted on the back cover, Richard Yates described this as a 'fine, tense, wholly absorbing novel. You can read it at one sitting and miss none of its power, but it deserves to be studied for the skill of its construction and the complexity of its interlocking ironies.'

Wodehouse first edition book has its original blue binding that has black lettering the front and spine and measures 5¼ x 7¾ inches (approximately). This book was published by Methuen in 1927 and conforms to P.G. Wodehouse A Comprehensive Bibliography by Eileen McIlvaine (A37). The Copyright Page confirms that this is a first printing. The original blue binding is in Good condition with the front board being incredibly clean and attractive, slight wear to the spine, staining and marks to the plain back board, corner knocks, and shelf lean. There are 251 numbered pages and 8 pages of Methuens General Literature to the end of the book. The pages are in overall Very Good condition being very clean and firmly bound into the book, but with age toning to the front and rear endpapers, and discolouration to the edges of the pages that are mainly noticeable when the book is closed.
