Temperance and anti-smoking work by English-born American biographer, best known for his works on Horace Greeley, Andrew Jackson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Voltaire. 12mo (17cm.); original green blind and gilt-ruled cloth, upper cover and spine lettered in gilt, brown glazed endpapers; viii,[9]-151pp. Spine cocked; two short closed tears and small blemish to glaze of front free endpaper. Congressman and 23rd United States Attorney General Caleb Cushing's copy with his signature "C. Cushing" to front flyleaf. Additional pressure stamp of a Paul Edson Green of Westfield, NY, to front free endpaper and flyleaf.
