About This Item

London: Secker and Warburg, 1990. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. A little light foxing to the top edge otherwise a near fine copy in a D/W with the usual light fading to the spine. First Impression of Roddy Doyle's second novel and part of his Barrytown trilogy starting with The Commitments (1987) and concluding with The Van (1991). Brownbread (1987) and War (1989) are Doyle?s first two plays also set in Barrytown. The Snapper tells the story of Sharon Rabbitte's pregnancy as her father Jimmy discovers the pains and pleasures of being pregnant. Viewed through the lens and ear of Roddy Doyle as he captures the rhythm of everyday language/life in a funny, tender and revealing second novel, set in a period of rapid social change in Ireland. The Snapper, directed by Stephen Frears from Doyle's screenplay, premiered at Cannes in 1993 and was broadcast successfully on BBC TV. In 1995 The Snapper won a Goya Award for Best European Film. Quite a nice copy

Synopsis

Twenty-year-old Sharon Rabbitte is pregnant. She's also unmarried, living at home, working in a grocery store, and keeping the father's identity a secret. Her own father, Jimmy Sr., is shocked by the news. Her mother says very little. Her friends and neighbors all want to know whose "snapper" Sharon is carrying. In his sparkling second novel, Roddy Doyle observes the progression of Sharon's pregnancy and its impact on the Rabbitte family—especially on Jimmy Sr.—with wit, candor, and surprising authenticity.
