New York: McGraw Publishing Company, 1909. . 384 pages [viii] including an index of 18 pages. Frontispiece of Andrew Carnegie, who wrote the Introduction. Sub-titled " A Record of Things Done By American Industrialists Employing Upwards of One and One-Half Million of People". There is some wear at the spine's head and tail, corners lightly bumped and some soiling to spine and boards. Front hinge starting on the inside, the Frontispiece and title page are lightly stained, foxed along with a few pages in the text. William Tolman was the Director of the American Museum of Safety; Secretary American Section,International Congress of Improved Dwellings among other prestigious positions held. He affixed his bussiness card to the first paste-down endpaper and inscribed this copy on the FFendpaper " To, A.B. Comme (?) Ford, Newport R.I. From the Author 1909" (but he did not sign his name!). Quite interesting text book for the turn-of-the-century industrialist of examples of steps taken by others to improve productivity and management - employee relations. Description:
[Civil War] Bill of Lading. [New York?]: [Cromwell's New-York & New Orleans Steamship Line] November 21, 1863. One sheet 16.5 x 29 cm partly printed document with manuscript inserts. Very good. The Union forces in May 1863 captured the city of New Orleans. By this document $10,000 of United States Treasury Notes are being sent to the City, in all likelihood to purchase cotton or other goods from the captured port. See for example, the New York Times for September 1863 describing a shipment from New Orleans of cotton and accompanied by U.S. Treasury notes, since the Confederate Currency would no longer be valid, people would need to finance purchase and sales with U.S. financial instruments. Interestingly, in February 1863 Congress rejected a provision in the banking bill that would have made interest-bearing Treasury notes legal tender. An interesting look at the practical issues in carrying on commerce during the Civil War.
