Society of Montana Pioneers, n.p, 1899. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Book VG- hardcover with no Dust Jacket (as issued?). 262 p. : ill., maps, ports. ; 27 cm. Early historical material and maps for Montana. The maps include a large fold-out map on thin paper at the front that is a reproduction of W. W. DeLacy's 1865 map of Montana and colored maps for each of the 24 counties scattered throughout. There are four full-page "views" of Fort Benton, Bison, Worden and Company (Hell Gate Ronde) and Fort Owen. The bulk of the text is a listing of the Society's members, listed by county. There are also 14 pages of portraits, each featuring the Society's presidents from 1884 to 1898 Item Type: Book. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Green cloth over boards with bright gilt seal of the society on the front cover and bright gilt title on spine. Binding is tight but the cloth is worn through to the boards at the corners. There is an area along the bottom of the front and rear covers that is lightened as the result of some water damage. The line is no more than 3/4" high on the front panel and 2/8" high on the back. However, the cloth was weakened and is fraying. On the front panel, the left-most 3" has worn through along the bottom edge, exposing the board. The text block is unaffected. Spine has Dewey Decimal number on the spine and is stamped "Free Library of Philadelphia" at the top page edge, but there are no other library marks anywhere in the book. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2 lbs 15 oz. Category: Genealogy & Local History; United States / State & Local / West; 19th century; History. Library of Congress No: F726 .S7. Dewey Code: 978.6. Excellent images of cowboys with a covered wagon. First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Description:
[California] S. Lang? Autograph letter, signed. San Francisco, California. June 16, 1852. To his wife. One sheet folded into four leaves. Some 450 words, around 350 on the voyage.
Describes his trip across Panama, including being thrown off his mule, to the amusement of the natives. Also a woman who was a passenger had her two infants being carried by Indian women and they were separated during a torrential downpour. When they had not come to Panama City by nine p.m. they went searching for them and found them at 4 a.m., some 10 miles away "asleep on the bodies of their natives." They stopped to load coal in Acapulco. The passage took 25 days, but he arrived in good health, because until they were within three day of arrival "one might imagine him left on the Hudson Bay River so very smooth was the sea." Nice, if relatively brief, first-hand account of an 1854 steamship voyage to San Francisco.
