About This Item

Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Page, & Company, 1915. An unusually bright and attractive copy of the FIRST PRINTING of the 1915 "New and Revised Edition." Fine condition but for a few pages with very light scattered foxing (on mostly preliminary blanks). The original red buckram is still remarkably fresh. The gilt lettering is bright as new. SEE PHOTOS. Unlike the First Edition of 1903, this 1915 edition is beautifully illustrated in full-color with a frontispiece, title page and 10 other color plates. There are also many black and white photos. Because of the beautiful color plates, this edition is sought after by bird lovers as well as Gene Stratton Porter collectors. At 23cm, this edition is also the largest of any listed in MacLean. This copy has an attractive armorial bookplate designed by E. D. French, and comes from the library of Hiram Edmund Deats, one of the foremost collectors of the 19th century. His enormous philatelic library was second only to that of John K. Tiffany. MacLean 257a.. 1st printing of this illustrated edition. Hardcover. Fine condition. 8vo. 141pp.
