About This Item

Angus and Robertson Limited , 1915. 1st Edition. Hardcover. VG++/VG+. 1st Edition, 1st printing. 8vo., 15.5 x 19cm, xii, 13-126pp. Publisher's original green cloth with title to spine and titles & vignette to front board. Inscribed and signed to his great friend, Sir David Low, in the year of publication. Publisher's original dust jacket with ad for The Snowy River Series (listing sixteen titles of verse and four of prose) on the back panel as called for. The green cloth is in very good condition, noting a 1mm diameter black dot near the bottom of the front joint. The spine is a little toned with two tiny chips at the tip of each spine end. The bottom fore edge corner of the lower board has a tiny bump, the others remain firm and square. Internally, the book is generally in very good condition. There are a few light finger and other marks to the first few pages. The front free endpaper has two newspaper clippings stuck to it. One shows Hal Gye standing beside C J Dennis' memorial tablet and the other shows C J Dennis and his wife. The half title is inscribed in his characteristic green ink, as follows: 'To Dave Low / with a cobber's disrespect / C J Dennis / Nov. 9/15'. Sir David Low came to the UK from New Zealand via Australia and lodged with C J Dennis. In his autobiography (Low's Autobiography, Michael Joseph, 1956) he states: "I shared a studio with Hal Gye, caricaturist, and C.J. Dennis, poet, was our inseperable. Before settling in Melbourne, I lived as a fellow-lodger with Den for a space and finished my cartoons by night on his wash-stand while he read proofs aloud in bed. After that, Hal and I took our studio, and Hal arranged to illustrate Den's book. Thus the association was confirmed". The rare, original dust jacket is in remarkably good condition. It has minor chipping to the extremes of the spine ends, the worst of which is some 4cm down from the top of the upper joint. There is a 4mm closed tear at the top edge of the front panel, closed tears of 4mm & 1mm at the top edge of the rear panel and one of 4mm at the bottom edge of the rear panel. The spine is a little toned and its shoulders are lightly rubbed. There are a number of foxing spots and general age related light toning - please see the images with this listing. A signed first edition of this book is a very scarce thing but one as complete, in a dust jacket is exceptional. An outstanding example of this Australian cultural touchstone.
