About This Item

Sydney: Flamingo (HarperCollins), 2000. 510pp. FIRST PRINTING IN ENGLISH. Light even toning to page edges. This translation by noted Australian scholar, Mabel Lee, was the first English language edition of this winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for literature. At the time of winning the prize less than 500 copies had been sold worldwide in the English translation, this from a tiny initial print run. The author, preeminent playwright in China, was misdiagnosed as having cancer in 1982 and decided to end his days having the best of everything he could afford. After a second test revealed he did not have cancer, and facing time in a prison farm, Xingjian fled Beijing. For 6 weeks he entered a transendental state of imminent death then received his reprieve from death. This is the story of his journey. Extremely rare as true first.. First English Language Edition. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 8vo.
