London: Ackermann and Co, 1841. First edition. Hardcover. Three quarter red calf and maroon cloth. Very good. 15 pages in text. Folio, 39 x 28.5 cm. Thirty-one illustrations on 15 plates [sixteen hand-colored]. ABBEY TRAVEL 336. "An interesting book, combining lithographed line-drawings with more elaborate coloured lithographs. Gordon-Brown erroneously refers to the plates as coloured aquatints." TOOLEY 126. The attractive plates of hunting scenes illustrate sporting adventures on the Bontebok Flats in Kaffaria near the Kat River Settlement. The book was written and sketched on the spot, an early record of this part of South Africa by the author who served in the 59th Regiment. Interior contents bright and fresh, all plates with tissue guards, small book label, lower corners bumped, backstrip extremities slightly rubbed.
