London: John Murray, 1839 3rd edition, (1st published 8 years earlier in 1831), in contemporary full leather binding with 6 black and white plates. Classed as poor because the boards are adrift, there are loose preliminaries (at one point one was attached with sellotape) and there is browning, particularly where the plates have offset to tissue guards and text. There is a signature for John ?Slater Harrison, dated 1839 to a preliminary.Remaining contents nice and clean. There is light brown toning to paper.

Finland: Universal Pictures, 1950. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Fine. A superb-condition cinema-used Finnish A2 poster for the 1949 film JOHNNY STOOL PIGEON, starring Howard Duff, Shelley Winters and Dan Duryea. The film was first screened in Finnish cinemas in 1950 with no subsequent theatrical runs. This particular poster is a standard size 60cm x 40cm approx. It is in really excellent shape, Fine condition. There is a fold line near the top - slanted and visible only from the verso but none to the middle. At the top line of the titles in the letter "a" you can see a mounting hole and there is an enclosed tear surrounding the hole but this is almost invisible - I guess the poster was snatched from it's mounting without any ceremony. No further pinholes. At the bottom edge there is a very short tear and a smaller nick. Otherwise no edge wear apart from some minor handling creasing. The film was first screened in Finland in 1960 with no further subsequent releases. Designed by the prolific poster-artist Engel and printed by Salonen Oy. Signed in the plate. A stunning example of cinema advertising art, this poster is in Fine, vibrant condition, approximate size is 23.5 inches by 15.5 inches, standard Finnish A2 format. SIGNS OF USE: A rolled poster with no folding creases. Pinholes to the top corners only. There is a small tear to the top right corner at the artist's name. Otherwise in really Fine condition. For the best appreciation of condition please study the accompanying photograph which is high resolution.

A remarkable, apparently un-used Finnish A2 cinema-foyer poster for the celebrated Soviet-era, World War 2 movie, Zhivyje i mjortvyje known in English as The Alive and the Dead. Now acknowledged as a masterpiece the film attracted huge audiences on its release. The film was first screened in cinemas in Finland in November 1964 with no subsequent theatrical runs. This poster is not a modern reproduction or reprinting and nor is it Video/DVD-related. This particular poster is a standard size 60cm x 40cm approx and was printed by Rotapaino Oy, dated 1964. It is in Very Fine to Mint un-used condition - unfolded, free from pinholes or other signs of use. This is a rare poster in any condition but to find such a perfect example is a minor miracle. A vintage, original, Finnish cinema-used poster for the first screening (1962) in Finland of Sam Peckinpah's acclaimed western, starring Randolph Scott (in his last film) and Joel McCrea. The film won the First Prize at Cannes and is nowadays considered as the director's first "Great" movie. The poster names the movie as "Guns in the Afternoon" which was its European title.
