Glendale, CA: Arthur H Clark Company, 1943. First Edition. Fine. Unique Provenance: This specific series set came from the James S. Copley Rare Book Collection. Copley (1917-1973) was a journalist, newspaper chief and bibliophile. As publisher of the San Diego Union Tribune from 1947 until his death, he promoted an "unabashedly conservative, Republican and pro-American" proponent. Additionally, he was the sole stockholder of the Copley Press, Inc. and cozy supporter of many Republican candidates, especially Richard Nixon. Copleys personal Ex-Libris bookplate is affixed to all of the front endpapers Very attractive set of this important historical record. Gilt top edge with uncut fore and bottom edges. Each set has small hand written "Set 979" in pencil at the bottom right corner of each ffep. Red cloth of various shades with mostly still brilliant gilt titling on spine. As this series was published over 12 years, the shades of available cloth varied. This is the first major series published after the company's move to Glendale, CA. Bieber of Washington University was editor of the first eight volumes. However his "inordinate concern for details" led to missing too many deadlines. This required Clark to contract Hafen, Historian of Colorado, to finish the series. Vol I, "Adventures in the Santa Fe Trade", Vol II, "Frontier Life in the Army, 1854-1861", Vol III, "Journal of a Soldier Under Kearny and Doniphan", Vol IV, "Marching With the Army of the West", Vol V, "Southern Trails to California in 1849", Vol VI, "Wah-To-Yah and the Taos Trail", Vol VII, "Exploring Southwestern Trails", Vol VIII, "Historic Sketches of the Cattle Trade of The West and Southwest", Vol IX, "Pike's Peak Gold Rush Guidebooks of 1859", Vol X, "Colorado Gold Rush: Contemporary Letters and Reports", Vol XI, Overland Routes to the Gold Fields", Vol XII, The Southwest Historical Series: Historic documents, hitherto unpublished or inaccessible, depicting social and economic conditions in the Southwest during the Nineteenth Century

Description:
New York: J.H. Colton, 1864. Brown pebbled cloth cover stamped in blind and gilt is in pristine condition. 82 x 110 cm unfolded; 10 x 16 cm folded. Full original hand coloring on onion-skin paper. Very Good. Professionally repaired tear around section attaching to the board, and extending beneath the cartouche (hardly noticeable from the front), minor spotting beneath the cartouche. Note that this is not backed with linen as some folding maps are; the paper is nearly onion skin and while not brittle is fragile. We do not recommend that it be flattened for framing. A highly important folding pocket map to be used in the field during the Civil War, in extraordinary condition. LC Civil War Maps 48.2. OCLC lists only five locations for the 1864 edition: LC, Yale, Penn State, Library of Virginia and Wake Forest. Americana Exchange records only one auction record in the last 15 years, and only two before that.

1714 Joutel Journal Voyage MEXICO La Salle Texas Expedition Indians Mississippi

The BEST account of the La Salle's Texas Expedition!

Henri Joutel was an important 17th-century French explorer who is best remembered for his involvement in the final American expedition of Rene de La Salle. The Texas Expedition of Sla Salle began in 1684 when he and crew left France to establish a colony on the Gulf of Mexico. The voyage is one of the most important European voyages in search of the Mississippi River – a voyage the ended in mutiny and the death of La Salle. The established colony was a failure after being overtaken by Karankawa Indians.

According to Howes,
"Most reliable eye-witness account of La Salle's two-years wanderings in Texas."

Description:
Washington, D.C.: The White House, 1923. December 17, 1923, The White House - to Lew Wallace, Jr., (son of Lew Wallace, Union general in the American Civil War, governor of the New Mexico Territory and author of "Ben Hur")- "Dear Mr. Wallace, The growth of thrift and saving in this country promises well for our future. Only through sacrifice and hard work can we attain the cherished things in life. This means we must work and save. The progress of the United States Government Savings System, in giving to all our people an opportunity to invest in safe securities, is most worthy. By placing Treasury Savings Certyificates on sale in post offices, banks and trust companies, the Government has made available to everyone a security of unquestioned soundness. Their widespread sale makes for better citizenship, as each purchaser holds a stake in his Government. I believe, also, that the enlargement of a national Thrift movement will eventually stamp out the false and unsound practices of the… Read More

The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire… Read More
