About This Item

New-York: Rutgers Press ... Printed and Published by William A. Mercein, 1828. Softcover. Good. 12mo. Original printed salmon wrappers. 48pp. Wraps splitting along spine's length, general soiling; shaken, else good. An 1828 edition of a popular child's catechism that appeared from New York presses as early as 1765, has an appealing ornamental border along the upper cover. It was also heavily annotated in a contemporary hand in ink with numbers to the margins, a few scattered corrections to the text, and occasional comments and questions: "How will the saints employ in Heaven?" This copy was possibly used for editorial corrections for a subsequent and revised edition. [OFFERED WITH:] Laid in with this copy is a lovely period bookmark of blue silk and an applied and embossed paper die cut, stamped "Windsor" at the bottom, which shows a large, wreathed cross with allegorical images of two women on either side. The one woman leans on a large ship's anchor. The other woman nurses a baby with a child at her side. Hand-applied, within the cross on the paper screen, are the words "No Cross No Crown," presumably in reference to William Penn's famous work of the same title. This edition, or an edition with this imprint, not found in *OCLC. American Imprints* 33519.
