University of Georgia Press, Athens, Georgia, U.S.A, 1989. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. black titles spine; "early in 1862, the English journalist Edward Dicey arrived on the troubled shores of the United States for a six-month visit. A Northern sympathizer, he wanted to see the citizens and cities, the war, and President Lincoln with his own eyes. From New York he travelled to Washington and as far west as Wisconsin before returning east to Boston. Along the way, he observed and recorded the views of the diverse American populace, from staunch New England abolitionists to Westerners whose lives continued almost undisturbed by the war. The result of his travels was this narrative account, which appeared in England in 1863 but was unpublished in America until Herbert Mitgang's edition of 1971. Dicey sees everything in all its complexity - how the North is at once fiercely unionist but often indifferent or even hostile to the free Negro; how constitutional niceties paradoxically preserve slavery in the states under federal occupation; how the trend of war, however, lies clearly toward emancipation. Now available in paperback for the first time, Spectator of America remains an invaluable record of the Civil War era."; previous owner's name on front endpaper; including index - 318 pages.
