Stipple engraved, hand coloured title page and seven full page, hand coloured plates, plus full page engraved speech from As You Like it, titled The ages of Man, featuring one of Shakespeare's most enduring and often quoted lines - All the world's a stage, and all the men and women meerly players- each printed by R. Fenner. The plates are engraved by William Bromley after Stothards drawings. . Fine recent binding of quarter red straight grained morocco, the spine, ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Red morocco tips to corners of boards. Some offsetting from the Illustrations onto the text pages and some staining to the margins only on 5 pages but overall a very good attractive copy of this scarce and beautiful work.

"This edition is limited to 1,000 copies and cannot be reprinted, as the stones from which the offset plates were printed were in Belgium at the time of the German invasion, and were destroyed." Illustrated with twelve tissue-protedted, full-page plates and thirteen decorated opening initials by Alastair. This is the only edition with the Alastair plates. "Alastair" was the pseudonym of Baron Hans-Henning von Voigt (1887-1969), a German-born artist, dancer and mime, derived his provocative style of illustration directly from Aubrey Beardsley. His pictures are known for their combination of "decorative elegance with a fascination with the perverse, sinister and satanic" (Peppin & Micklethwait). This special edition of Wilde's The Sphinx, designed entirely by Alastair, contains ten fine tissue-guarded full-page black-and-white illustrations, two additional illustrations tipped front and rear, and numerous large ornamental initial letters—all heightened in teal by hand. "The publication of The Sphinx in 1920 signaled the start of Alastair's decade of fame… . . Nattali and Bond. London. No Date.,Circa 1850. THREE VOLUMES. Tall 8vo (10.2 x 6.6 inches). Text and plates taken from the Ninth edition. Complete set of this famous trilogy, with 80 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves in each volume but generally clean and bright copies in the scarce original publisher's brown cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and decoration on spines. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplates to front paste downe endpapers. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples. Slight uniform fading to spines but overall a very attractive set of this classic work with Rowlandson's humourous plates. Uncommon in the publishers original decorative cloth bindings.:

My Sister Life was written in the summer before the 1917 October Revolution, it was very well received and established him as a genius of Russian poetry. The English translation was done by Mark Rudman. The acclaimed Russian born artist, Yuro Kuyper provides 6 etchings for the publication, printed on Hannemule paper in Paris. The paper used for the text was hand-made by H. M. P. Mill in Connecticut to resemble the sort of stock produced in 1920's Russia, even incorporating bits of Russain newspapers with rags and cotton pulp. The book is in near fine condition, with the only defect being some sunning to the spinea. The slipcase in VG or better, showing some sunning. The book is signed by Yuri Kuyper and this copy is #212 of 250. The original LEC invoice for $4000 laid in; Etching; Folio 13" - 23" tall; Signed by Illustrator .
