Philadelphia, PA: J.B. Lippincott & Co, 1862. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 272 pp. plus 8 pp. of ads.
Brown, elaborately-tooled cloth boards with recent work by our conservationist - rebacked, (the few library markings and pocket which were
present expertly removed) and a lovely wraparound spine of rich, dark brown leather. Five raised bands delineated by gilt, oak leaf emboss to each section of spine. Period-correct red leather label and gilt-stamped 1862 to very bottom.
Lovely, scarce volume on the art and conduct of war. Two inscriptions to front free endpaper:
1) "Capt. P.B. Johnson A.Q.M. * January 14, 1864"
2) "Presented by Heir December 1874" *AQM = Assistant Quartermaster
Captain Johnson was a well-known newspaper correspondent and Republican activist in the states of Washington and Oregon, becoming editor and (soon thereafter) sole owner of the Walla Walla (Washington) union, at some point working for the Portland Oregonian, and finally giving up his financial interest oin the Walla Walla paper in 1890. First published in Paris in 1845, as DE L' ESPRIT DES INSTITUTIONS MILITAIRES, this English translation comprises "a condensation of these principles, not gathered from books, but presented from the author's experience of campaigns in which he played important parts, and on battle-fields of which he was an eye-witness, and, in many cases, a commander of the highest grade..."
Two years after publication of the 1864 edition Marmont's classic was adopted by the Confederate Army as an official military manual.
Augustus Frederick Louis Viesse De Marmont (1774-1852), was a sub-lieutenant before he was sixteen years of age -- indeed, he wrote: "...The Army was my cradle; I have passed my life in its ranks..." He was a soldier's soldier, and his list of military engagements reads like a veritable telephone book.

The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows
) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions…
