Longman, Rees, Orme and others: London, 1837. Botanical art and literature, this rare and beautiful gift book begins: 'The oak is the glory of the British sylva. What the palm is to tribes of the desert, and the banian to the inhabitants of the East, such is the oak to Britons...'. Octavo, 26 hand-coloured plates, nineteenth-century gilt calf, top-edge gilt, with errata slip; three plates have smudges and two have browned, front inner hinge split and detached, else a very good copy, presumed first edition. A bookbinder's dream.
