Black cloth gilt, light rubbing except tail of spine which well rubbed, front hinge paper cracked, lacks ffep, half title foxed, otherwise internally clean, tight and very good. Description of the journey made by Hayden in 1922 as the result of the request by the Tibetan Government that a geologist be sent to advise them on the development of their mineral resources (Marshall 2458). In addition to his guide friend Cesar Cosson, he was accompanied by Gujjar Singh, a surveyor from the Survey of India, who succeeded in producing a detailed map of 36,000 miles,on the scale of 4 miles to the inch, a reduced copy of which at the scale of approximately 16 miles to the inch (or 1:1,000,000), accompanies the book. Sir Henry Hubert Hayden (1869-1923) had been Director of the Geological Survey of India and had previously accompanied Sir Francis Younghusband on the abortive armed Mission to Lhasa in 1903-04. Younghusband in his Introduction gives high praise to Hayden for his efforts then, "in bringing the Tibetans around to a more favourable attitude towards us." Cesar Cosson ( -d.1923) was a Swiss guide who had accompanied Hayden on other climbing ventures. Both were killed the next year in an avalanche on the Finsteraarhorn, in Switzerland.
