About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,colour pictorial artwork by Marc Bouavant, illustrated dw/dj; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present. Miniscule bumping with reciprocal creasing to both head+foot of spine/backstrip and the edges.A vertical crease to spine/backstrip also.Top+fore-edges bright and clean, contents bright, tight and near pristine.Clean, publisher's original plain, black cloth boards with bright, crisp, stamped silver gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain red endpapers - security tag still in situ to front board's lower,left-hand corner.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-390pp [paginated] includes 144 chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+ title pages, dedication and 2pp blanks at rear. At fifty-seven,George is settling down to a comfortable retirement, building a shed in his garden, reading historical novels, listening to a bit of light jazz. Then Katie, his tempestuous daughter, announces that she is getting remarried,to Ray.Her family is not pleased - as her brother James observes,Ray has 'strangler's hands'.Katie can't decide if she loves Ray,or loves the wonderful way he has with her son Jacob, and her mother Jean is a bit put out by all the planning and arguing the wedding has occasioned, which get in the way of her quite fulfilling late-life affair with one of her husband's former colleagues. And the tidy and pleasant life Jamie has created crumbles when he fails to invite his lover,Tony,to the dreaded nuptials.Unnoticed in the uproar,George discovers a sinister lesion on his hip,and quietly begins to lose his mind. The way these damaged people fall apart - and come together - as a family is the true subject of Mark Haddon's disturbing yet very funny portrait of a dignified man trying to go insane politely. Please contact rpaxtonden@blueyonder.co.uk ,because of the lighter weight of this item, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!

Synopsis

A Spot of Bother is the second adult novel by Mark Haddon, who is best known for his prize-winning first novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Like Curious Incident, A Spot of Bother examines mental health issues from the perspective of the patient. An excerpt from A Spot of Bother (at that point titled Blood and Scissors) was published in the book New Beginnings, the proceeds from which were donated to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
