The back of the dust jacket describes the main character John Shaft: "Who the hell does he think he is, this blackface Bogart who says the Revolution is a new way to chase chicks, the Mafia is made of meatballs and life is going to screw you if you don't get to it first? Who? John Shaft, private investigator, a man so cool his blood runs ice."
