About This Item

New York:: Ecco Press (Harper Collins),, (2008.). Fine in fine dust jacket.. First printing. The author's impressive first novel, the story of a mute young man, growing up in remote Northern Wisconsin. Dust jacket praise from such diverse writers as Stephen King (who called it 'wonderful, mysterious, long and satisfying'), Richard Russo, Mark Doty (who said 'This remarkable novel seems like an impossibility: an American Hamlet, both ghost story and melodrama, a coming-of-age tale, a hymn to the land - and central to it all, some of the best writing about the inner lives of dogs anywhere. .. a woolly, unlikely, daring book, and wildly satisfying.') and more. This is the rather uncommon true first printing of the first edition: it had gone into several printings before it was selected by Oprah and reissued under a different isbn but with a full number line. Has correct isbn and the untrimmed fore-edge of the textblock, as required. 566 pp. Dust jacket art by Debra Lill.

Synopsis

David Wroblewski grew up in rural Wisconsin, not far from the Chequamegon National Forest where the novel is set. He earned an MFA from the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers. This is his first novel.

On Aug 5 2017, a reader said:
I found this book to be one of those rare finds in the life of an avid reader that stays with the you and impacts your life. I love the style and pace of writing in Edgar Sawtelle to be engaging and almost dream like. I read it in hardcover first and then listened to it 3 more times since then on Audible. Richard Poe's narration was one of the best I've heard in this format. The tone of his voice and the ability to sound younger, older, male and female was seamless. He clearly grasped the mood of this book. Overall I'm adding this work by Wroblewski to my small list of life time favorite books that I know I will share with others and read again and again over the years.

About Bookfever.com, IOBA

This is our 23rd year in business. We started selling books in the CompuServe Book Collecting forum in 1993, quite a while before there was any commercial Internet. In 1998 we relocated our main business from Sacramento to the Sierra foothills of Amador County, about 35 miles east of downtown Sacramento and opened a store (called Books Upstairs) at the Antiques Upstairs Mall, 5 Main Street, Jackson, CA. (open every day from 10-5) The emphasis there is on Western Americana, children's books, mysteries, science fiction, and inexpensive reading copies of classics and vintage juvenile series. Please let us know if there are any other books you are looking for; we enjoy helping collectors complete their collection and we can often suggest books for reading! .
