by Bannerman, Helen

Condition: Good/No Jacket

New York: F. A. Stokes, 1900. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Rare 1st edn with all key points, stains and wear to cover esp. along edges but reasonably good internal condition, 27 lovely drawings, blue titles and kids' trousers, tan spine binding, 12mo, v + 56pps, a few short open tears that can easily be repaired. Date is a guess as no copyright page which is important in establishing edition--Bannerman was very suspicious of publishers as the one in London bilked her, f/o first name on pastedown..

The Story of Little Black Sambo is a children’s book written and illustrated by Scottish-born author Helen Bannerman for her children while her family was living in India. The story of a young Indian boy who outsmarts four tigers that threaten to eat him has been noted a controversial with its publication in the United States, accused of presenting racist overtones, primarily because of its illustrations. However, many “American editions” were pirated versions, lacking Bannerman’s name on the title page, that were reillustrated, producing degrading caricatures.  Read more: Identifying first editions of The Story of Little Black Sambo

Michael Bond - the man behind Paddington Bear

"All the same ... it's a very important name. And I don't expect there are many bears in the world called Paddington!"

A lonely toy bear on an empty shop shelf on Christmas Eve in 1956 first captured the attention of Michael Bond, who kindly shared Paddington with the world.
