(Cape Town: Struik, 1968). Small 4to; original blue cloth; pictorial dustwrapper (housed in removable protector); endpaper map; pp. (viii) + 186; maps, black-and-white plates. Dustwrapper slightly rubbed; very light wear to extremities; slight bump to tail of spine and bottom edge of lower board; earlier owner's ink stamp to title page; trace of spotting to top edge. Very good condition. "A few of the stories are straightforward accounts, but all of them have some strange feature. The majority pose a question of some sort: What became of the ship? In what circumstances was it wrecked? What happened to the crew? Where is the treasure? Why did so many perish? Some of the questions are answered: we learn the full story of the missing 'Sussex', how the 'La Rozette' came be wrecked by the mutineers, and where the crew of the 'Briseis' was. Other problems remain unsolved: Did the 'Missing Squandron' founder? What became of Simon van der Stel's son in Madagascar? What happened to the 'Waratah'? Many of these tales are still told when seamen congregate, and the question always arises: What happened? Your guess is as good as mine." .
