Contemporary half red morocco gilt, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, front cover reattached with some loss to hinges, gently rubbed, else fine. A fresh copy, leaves facing plates with offsetting as always, heavier to some, foxing and browning, generally a good copy. First edition. Detailed and picturesque narrative on late 18th and early 19th century United States, particularly Adams and Jefferson´s time; the work contains criticism, notes and curious observations on the characters, costumes, commerce, arts, immigration and the slave trade. Janson lived and worked Rhode Island, Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia, failing in business most times. The work is embellished with an engraved frontispiece and 10 handsomely produced aquatint plates by M. Marigot after Janson; including a plan and several views of Philadelphia, the Bank of the United States, Mount Vernon and Boston.
