(1964), 16mo, 215pp. [3], "He had promised a dying prospector to even an old score and he meant to keep his word, with his guns." "The Stranger from the Tonto [S., the confluence of the San Juan and Colorado Rivers now under the waters of Lake Powell; T., about 1895]. It involves another Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story, along with another knight errant rescuing another fair damsel in distress. Much of the action takes place in a nearly inaccessible outlaw hideout, which intrigues me more than the plot." Charles G. Pfeiffer

This romance is true to Grey's conception of the Pleasant Valley War and he bases it upon the setting he learned to know and love so well, upon the strange passions of primitive people, and upon his instinctive reaction to the facts and rumors he had gathered. He handled the female persona fairly well and touched on what is now called the "Stockholm syndrome". Needless to say her champion was soon evident and helped her persevere through the tough spots. The story takes many twists and turns throughout the adventure, and does keep ones interest, mostly. I liked it and my… Read More
