About This Item

Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen, a New Translation with over 200 illustrations, by Harrison Weir, V. Pederson, M.I. Stone, A.W. Bayes, and Others,

Published by Porter & Coates, Philadelphia. No date, but very early date – see info below on "Alta Edition."

Includes detailed sixteen-page introductory biography: "Life of Andersen". Green cloth boards, black embossed cover and spine design with vine and leaves. Title in the black book on front cover and Alta Edition in an outlined box lower middle of cover. On the spine is the title, the word, "Illustrated" and publisher's name which is not as clear as the other two. Cover and spine are faded and rubbed with edge wear. The ends of spine are fraying. Small chip on the back cover. Binding intact, but loose. First three pages have detached from the hinge. Interior clean and unmarked except for previous owner's name on two of the fly pages. In addition to the owner's name there is a little stick figure. Several of the pages have small tears on the edges. Index to contents at back in alphabetical order rather than by page number. Approximately 5" wide x 8" tall. 352 pages.

Extended Description and Notes

From research on the internet, I discovered copies of this same book but in red or burgundy cloth. This book, as many other similar books that state, "Alta Edition" is undated. The definition of "Alta Edition" means Edition A or First Edition. However, Porter and Coates published a series of books between 1870 and 1890 which they called Alta Editions but not one of them was a first edition and rather reprints of earlier published books. The title page has periods after the title, author's name, publisher's name and afterword, "Illustrated." Definitely an old book with historical value. See photos for additional information on condition.
