Sugar Mountain

by Clark, Tom & Lewis Warsh

  • Used
66 leaves, mimeographed rectos only, the only issue of a possible intended series, containing poetry by Alice Notley, Ted Berrigan, Bill Berkson, Tom Clark, Scott Cohen, Lewis MacAdams, Joanne Kyger, Ron Padgett, Harris Schiff, John Thorpe, Charlies Vermont, Anne Waldman, and Lewis Warsh. Not illustrated. A few pages with very slight creasing to corners, overall excellent. Tall 4to. Original photo-illustrated stapled wrpps. featuring a nude portrait of Alice Notley by Jayne Nodland to the front cover. Some rust to staples, several small stains from stickers to top of front cover. n.p. [Bolinas, California] 1970. Of Sugar Mountain Lewis Warsh has written, "Tom Clark and I edited the one-shot magazine Sugar Mountain in the spring of 1970. We were both living in Bolinas, California....Suddenly there was a poetry community....and Sugar Mountain reflects the beginning of it all. It was a kind of miracle for so many poets of different stripes (Black Mountain, Beat Generation, New York School, San Francisco Renaissance) to interact and collaborate on a daily level, dissolving the borders between life and poetry, and much of it had to do with the magic of Bolinas, situated on a fragile cliff overlooking the Pacific with the lights of San Francisco blinking in the distance....but by the end of the 1970s many of the poets had moved away." (Warsh, From a Secret Location, January 2017).
