About This Item

Sunset Pass by Zane Grey (author of Westerns, notably for shaping how the genre would develop and be popularized in the 20th century, notably his book Riders of the Purple Sage) Hardcover First Edition - First Printing New York: Harper & Brothers, 1931. First edition stated with the appropriate printing code K-F which indicates November, 1931 (According to Harper & Brothers printing codes, K=November, and F=1931.) $2.00 cover price on the front dust jacket flap. NOTE: (This is NOT the later Grosset & Dunlap edition which would not be a true first edition even though some sellers are characterizing such as copies as being firsts.) Made into a Hollywood film in 1933 starring Randolph Scott and directed by Henry Hathaway.

Fine in Very Good+ Dust Jacket. A beautiful copy overall, the book itself is essentially fine, corners straight, pages clean. The main shortcoming of the dust jacket is a half-dime size chip to the upper front and fraying to the upper and lower spine, but overall it's much nicer and cleaner than most copies you're likely to find. Most copies of this book lack the dust jacket which tells me it is probably fairly rare or at least extremely uncommon in original dust jacket.

Pearl Zane Grey (January 31, 1872 – October 23, 1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories of the Old West, aka Westerns genre in literature and the arts; he idealized the American frontier. Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) is perhaps his best-selling book. In addition to the commercial success of his printed works, they had second lives and continuing influence when adapted as films and television productions. His novels and short stories have been adapted into 112 films, two television episodes, and a television series, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater. Grey would pave the way for many authors of the Western genre such as Louis L'Amour, Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy.

NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers.

Reviews

On Apr 10 2020, a reader said:
What can I say about this book? Sunset Pass is vintage Zane Grey--what most people expect to find. Trueman Rock, a man who can use a gun to fight cattle rustlers and crooked men, when he returns home to Wagontongue, he expects trouble from his old enemies, but he finds new enemies as well. Ash Preston was the meanest, most violent man True has ever come up against, and not only that, the brother of the girl he loves, Thiry Preston. This is a good book; solid, with believable characters, reasonable, difficult situations for the hero and heroine to overcome, and romance as only Zane Grey can tell it. Four out of five stars is about right as to a rating. Good, but not great; better than almost anything written today. I recommend it.
