About This Item

London: Printed for the author and sold by C. Dilly, P. Elmsly and J. Stockdale, 1785. First Edition. Leather bound. Near Fine. 8vo. Pp vii, 326, [7]. With two folding plates. Index. Bound in three-quarter polished calf, speckled, over dark khaki linen, with five raised bands, morocco labels in red and green, lettering and ornaments in gilt. TEG. Slight age-toning and foxing to preliminaries, else Fine.

A superb copy of the first edition. A Neapolitan, Cavallo bolted for London where he found welcome reception for his researches into the properties of electricity and gasses. London's intellectual milieu soon elected him to the Royal Society of London. Cavallo's work provides a history of ballooning and his work with aerostatic experiments, as well as that of others', including Pilatre de Rozier, the Montgolfier brothers, et al. The plates generously illustrate his audacious experiments, laying a foundation for the future of flight. BROCKETT (Bibliography of Aeronautics, 1910), 2610. TISSANDIER (Bibliographie Aeronautique, 1887) cites the first French edition, published the following year.
