San Francisco, CA USA: Boothby World Drinks Co. Second-hand hardcover. Near Fine. Boothby, William T. Swallows: 'Cocktail Bill' Boothby's World Drinks: & how to prepare them. Boothby's World Drinks Co: San Francisco, CA USA 1930. 8vo (195x140mm) HC Dec Bds 160pp. VG/- very light rubbing to spine edges, minor toning to feps. Boothby, The Honourable William T. Swallows: "Cocktail Bill" Boothby's World Drinks & How to Prepare Them - the standard authority - completely revised and greatly enlarged into an unabridged encyclopedia of all popular beverages. [FIRST EDITION - THUS] San Francisco: Boothby's World Drinks Co. 1930 (printed by The Recorder Printing & Publishing Co, San Francisco). 8vo (195x140mm) hardcover decorative marbled cloth boards, silver gilt lettering, 160pp. Free end papers lightly offset toned, spine foot very lightly rubbed. A very good, near fine copy of a scarce edition. 'Cocktail Bill' Boothby was the pre-eminent bartender in San Francisco from the 1890s until prohibition. He lead an extremely chequered career as a traveling medicine show performer, bar-keep, politician, cocktail book author, restaurateur, and cocktail bartender at many of San Francisco's establishments. His first book 'Boothby's American Bartender', first published in 1891, ran to several revised editions, illuminating and recording the changing West Coast cocktail scene up to prohibition. Despite prohibition, he continued to work as a bartender and in 1922 he was arrested for breaking the Volstead Act. The circumstances of the publication of this, one of the few books on cocktails published in the US during Prohibition are unclear. Boothby died in August 1930 of cancer, several months before the copyright registration of the book with the Library of Congress in November 1930. A parallel paperback edition was also registered at the same time. Both are scarce. His signature, a Manhattan Boothby, a Manhattan with a dash of Champagne appears on p.55.[LCCN 31001976, OCLC records only 3 copies held and none outside the USA]
