Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855) is the pen name of French Romantic poet and author Gérard Labrunie. His novella "Sylvie" was first published in the periodical "La Revue des Deux Mondes" in 1853, and as a book in "Les Filles du feu" in 1854. His work is associated with the French Romanticism and Symbolist movements, and cited as influential by several authors of those schools, including Marcel Proust, and T. S. Eliot who concluded his poem "The Waste Land" with a quote from Nerval. Illustrated by André Beaudin (1895-1979) one of the leading painters of the École de Paris, whose intuitive lithographs compliment the shifting perspectives of time in the text, emphasizing the binary oppositions of color which Nerval used as a mechanism to highlight events of the past against those of the present. ___DESCRIPTION: Original stiff white wrappers with title printed in bold black to upper wrap, with original glassine, folio with quires loose as issued, fore- and bottom edges uncut, twenty full-page color lithographs including frontispiece, fourteen half-titles with color lithograph vignettes; velin d'Arches paper, text in French, folio size (13 1/4" by 10 1/8"), 127 pp., limited edition, this number 177 of 180 copies from a total edition of 200, signed by the artist.
