Most pages printed in dual columns which are numbered separately. Pages generally bright and clean. Bound in matching full contemporary Dutch vellum with blindstamped arabesque centerpiece and blindruled paneling on covers. Red leather spine label with gilt title and volume number on each volume. Provenance: From the collections of Wolferdus Seneguerdius (1646-1724), professor of physics at Leiden, with his contemporary ownership inscriptions; Philip Van Swinden, with later 18th Century bookplate; Rev. James Thomas Law (1790-1876), signature dated 1815; and Wells Theological College, with 19th Century bookplates (gift from Law).Vol. 1: [1 leaf] + I-VIII numbered pages + [3 leaves] + 1-1248 columns (1206 misnumbered) + [1 leaf] + 1-1028 columns (569-70, 579-80 misnumbered). Poole (1624-1679) was an English Non-Conformist. After the Popish Plot (1678), he feared for his safety and fled to Amsterdam. His Synopsis Criticorum is a comprehensive survey of the views of one hundred fifty biblical critics.
