Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson and Son, 1817. Hardcover. Very Good. Second edition. Vol. one only: xii, 409, [1] p., 1 leaf of a plate; 22 cm. Modern bonded leather with six spine compartments between gilt rules. Black labels in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "System of Anatomy" and in fourth compartment with volume number, author, and date. Printed by William Fry. Former owners' names on the title page and Preface indicating that it belonged to James Rush Anderson and other doctors in the Anderson family. Caspar Wistar (1761-1818) taught anatomy, midwifery, and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania from 1789 to his death in 1818. He published A System of Anatomy in two volumes in 1811 and 1814. He served as president of both the American Philosophical Society and the Society for the Abolition of Slavery. In Very Good Condition: modern binding and free endpapers; foxing and browning, occasionally heavy; a few marginal pencilled notations.

Vol.I xii + 422 pps. ; Vol. II viii + 453 pps. with folding table correctly placed at p.300 as per binder's instruction at top corner of the sheet. Full contemporary leather with spines ruled in gilt and gilt-lettered labels. Occasional contemporary small pencil notations. Leather is well rubbed and has peeling in places, corners rounded, chipping to the haed and foot spine edges; front board of Vol. I is quite loose but still attached. Ownership sig, dated 1815 in pencil on front free endpaper of Vol. I and in ink along top of the title page; own. sig. and date of 1815 in ink on title page of Vol. II. Upper corners torn from margins of 7 leaves in Vol. II, not affecting the text. The first American textbook on the subject of anatomy, a classic in its field that went to several editions in the first half of the 19th century.
